Part 1: Re-Framing Conflict as Opportunity

Conflict is inevitable, so having the skills to handle conflicts that arise is critical for the college peer leader. This webinar will teach students to use conflict as an opportunity to solve a problem while building relationships.  Our expert instructor on conflict-management gives you the skills to shift perspectives of conflict from negative to positive. Explore the Conflict Web and learn strategies to help all parties re-frame the conflict, role-switch to build perspectives and get started with the resolution process. Peer leaders will gain skills to:

  • Face Conflict
  • Re-frame the Conflict as an Opportunity
  • Get Out of the "You're Wrong; I'm Right" Mentality
  • Understand the Importance of Empathy
  • Begin Solving Problems While Building Relationships

This interactive webinar provides opportunities to engage in reflection, discussion and brainstorming.  After the webinar, you will receive a 30-minute follow-up activity to help you apply the webinar's concepts and immediately begin improving your approach to managing conflict.

Part 2: Developing an Effective Communication Style for Managing Conflict

Peer leaders will complete a Conflict Styles Self-Assessment prior to watching the video to determine their current conflict styles. Our expert instructor will them explore the 4 different styles and how to improve a peer leader's approach to conflict.  Learn about different types of interactions: aggressive, passive, passive-aggressive, and assertive as well as what is "fair" and "unfair fighting". Then, explore how to developing an effective conflict style helps facilitate effective conflict management which results in solving problems while building the relationships among all parties.  Peer leaders will gain skills to:

  • Understand Personal Conflict Style 
  • Develop A Style to More Effectively Manage Conflict
  • Fight "Fair"
  •  Keep the Focus on Solving Problems While Building Relationships


Pearl W.  Bell, MA

Pearl has taught at The Conflict Center for over 9 years and is adjunct faculty at University College at the University of Denver. An experienced speaker and trainer in the areas of Conflict, Anger, Communication, Relationships and Violence Prevention, she has spoken on topics such as Transformative Mediation, Social Norming, Bullying Prevention, Dating Violence, Karpman’s Triangle and Power, Privilege and Oppression.    She received her dual Master’s Degrees from the University of Denver in International Studies and in Conflict Resolution, she has a Certificate in Alternative Dispute Resolution and Mediation.  


Jill Schmidt, MSW

Jill  is an Instructor and Program Assistant at The Conflict Center where she has been teaching classes in the area of conflict and anger management to youth and adults since September 2013 as well as working with community partners and instructors to schedule classes and workshops. Jill received her Bachelors in Social Work from Bethel College, Kansas in 2005 and Masters in Social Work from the University of Denver in 2014. She has spent the past ten years working with youth and young adult volunteers excited about making a difference in the world. Through her work and personal experiences, Jill has seen the ways that effective communication and conflict skills transform community and interpersonal relationships. She is excited to share these skills with others.
