Effective career advising increases students’ confidence in their choice of major and supports them in developing clear career goals, which improves persistence and graduation rates. In this course, academic advisors, faculty advisors, student success coaches and new career counselors will gain the basic knowledge and skills to support students in career and choice of major decision-making.

Why This Topic Matters

Research indicates having career goals increases student success and retention. Yet, only 27% of students get help with a career plan, according to the most recent Student Voice survey. These statistics have led to a trend of integrating introductory career advising into the fields of advising and success coaching. When advisors and coaches provide effective career advising support, they play a crucial role in student success by helping students develop appropriate career goals, feel more confident in their choice of major, complete their degrees and prepare for professional success after graduation.
