Academic Coaching Basics Certification Course

Begins July 7th | Online Course | $495

This 8-hour, mostly asynchronous course includes videos, readings, application activities and resources for newer academic advisors. Learn how to conduct effective coaching sessions, apply appreciative advising/coaching, utilize learning theory, teach academic strategies and motivate students to succeed. This course includes 4 virtual sessions (recorded for those unable to attend) at 12:00 p.m. ET - 1:00 p.m. ET on July 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th.


Why Academic Coaching?

Academic Coaching provides proactive and consistent support for students. The coaching process builds a relationship between a student and coach, creating a sense of belonging on campus for all students and can be especially impactful for at-risk student populations.

Overview

Academic coaching requires and understanding of how to run an effective coaching session by applying coaching principles, learning theory and learning strategies. They also need resources to give students bases on students’ specific challenges along with strategies for supporting students in goal-setting, motivation and goal-achievement. In this course, you will:

  • Consider how to conduct an effective academic coaching session.

  • Understand learning takes place in a coaching session, including applicable learning theories, learning research and teaching strategies.

  • Utilize appreciative coaching/advising strategies.

  • Explore key academic support topics and a variety of tools for each support topic that an academic coach can introduce to students to overcome their unique challenges.

  • Learn how best to teach students about the academic support topics and tools so they walk away with the understanding and motivation to follow through.

Course Contributors

Dr. Terrance J. McClain, Director of the Student Success Center, McCoy College of Business Texas State University-San Marcos

Dr. McClain currently oversees all aspects of the Student Success Center. Previously, he was Associate Director of University Success Coaching where he oversaw the program from he hired and trained coaches, redesigned the program to ground it in theory and research and built campus connections to support the success of the program; he significantly increased student coaching services on his campus. He was previously a success coach and before that managed the CAFE, a Career and Financial Education program and developed a highly successful money management center on his campus. He also oversaw the campus professional development program, the Career Readiness Institute, for training, support and development of department academic leaders to promote departmental leadership and on-going skill development. Previously, he has held positions as an academic advisor and academic coach. Additionally, as the past president of TEXAAN, he provided leadership and professional development opportunities for academic advisors in Texas.


Mónica Martínez El Sheikh, Associate Director, Academic Coaching and Advising, Florida Atlantic University (FAU)

Mónica is the Associate Director for Academic Coaching and Advising within the ACCESS Program of University Advising Services. In her role, she manages the operational calendar of the ACCESS Program, supervises a staff of professional ACCESS Coaches and Advisors, directs the Peer Academic Coaching (PAC) Program, and coordinates two First-Year Experience (FYE) Courses. Mónica’s efforts serve to provide academic skill development and academic coaching to first-and-second year students. As a part of her work, she utilizes the Appreciative Education framework.

Mónica earned her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Georgia and began her career as a Defense Contractor supporting the Department of Defense and State Department. Through her extensive volunteer work, she realized that her true passion was to help others to achieve their highest potential. Mónica went on to earn her Master of Education in Counseling and Development from George Mason University. After going into the counseling field, she discovered her love of advising and working with college students. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Higher Education Leadership from FAU, where her dissertation research focuses on the use of humor in academic advising. She is also a Certified Appreciative Advisor.

Gail Mishler, M.S. Ed (She/Her/Hers), Academic Success Coach, Center for Academic Achievement, Florida Gulf Coast University

Gail currently provides academic success coaching for students who are struggling academically and/or underachieving. Utilizing her department’s approach of Appreciative Advising, skill-building and resource referrals, she supports students in improving their academic performance. She also provided instruction for academic success classes, including an academic probation class using many of the trust-building, motivation and study skills strategies she employs in her academic coaching.

Gail brings to her academic coaching role an eclectic background which includes being a radio broadcaster; event & club DJ, professional singer, pre- k-12 teacher, and college instructor. Her super power is empathy and supporting students in reaching their goals for success at FGCU and beyond.
