Overview

Academic coaching provides students with individualized, one-on-one support with a trained academic coach or peer coach who can help improve academic skills and performance.

In this session, you will explore key components behind effective academic coaching through the lens of a successful academic coaching program. The facilitator will then provide strategies to conduct effective coaching sessions that support students in an authentic, caring way and allow them to move forward after one or more semesters of failures.

Instructor

Terrance J. McClain, Student Development Specialist- Career and Financial Education (CAFE), Texas State University-San Marcos

Dr. McClain currently oversees the CAFE, a Career and Financial Education program at Texas State University-San Marcos. He also developed a highly successful money management center on his campus and oversees the campus professional development program, the Career Readiness Institute. This Institute trains, supports and develops the department’s academic leaders as part of on-going skills development. Moreover, he has significantly increased student coaching services on his campus. Previously, he has held positions as an academic advisor and academic coach. Additionally, as the current president of TEXAAN, he provides leadership and professional development opportunities for academic advisors in Texas.
