Overview

Academic coaching provides students with individualized, one-on-one support with a trained academic coach who can help improve academic skills and performance. Working with an academic coach can help students study smarter by developing skills in time management, goal setting, and test preparation. Academic coaches have training in academic success strategies but also in build trust, motivating students and helping them access the campus resources they need.

In this session, you will explore what a successful academic coaching program looks like and how to reach and support students in an authentic, caring way that allows them to move forward after one or more semesters of failures. This interactive webinar will give you strategies for:

  • Identifying your coaching/advising style

  • Working with students who are struggling/underachieving

  • Guiding students to their best path using an Asset-based (not Deficit-based) focus

  • Building trust

  • Motivating students through challenging circumstances

Instructor

Gail Mishler, M.S. Ed (She/Her/Hers), Academic Success Coach, Center for Academic Achievement, Florida Gulf Coast University

Gail currently provides academic success coaching for students who are struggling academically and/or underachieving. Utilizing her department’s approach of Appreciative Advising, skill-building and resource referrals, she supports students in improving their academic performance. She also provided instruction for academic success classes, including an academic probation class using many of the trust-building, motivation and study skills strategies she employs in her academic coaching.

Gail brings to her academic coaching role an eclectic background which includes being a radio broadcaster; event & club DJ, professional singer, pre- k-12 teacher, and college instructor. Her super power is empathy and supporting students in reaching their goals for success at FGCU and beyond.
