Career conversations are critical to student success. On many campuses, however, career services remain optional and fragmented. Students are expected to seek assistance on their own, which is often difficult for students, especially first-generation college students who are unacquainted with the college environment. This program provides solutions that move toward a more blended academic and career advising model to bolster equity and student success.

Overview
Integrating career and academic advising helps close equity gaps in higher education by ensuring all students receive the career development they need from the start of their college career. This program will help institutions who want to integrate existing offices or cultivate cross-campus collaboration but question where to start or wonder which challenges they may encounter along the way.
Nationally, students report they do not receive the career information they desire or need. Institutions have recently given thoughtful consideration to the ways educational and vocational planning are intertwined. This webinar will help enhance your ability to create organizational structures that foster success and career engagement among all students. Attendees will hear from three institutions who have been recognized nationally for their integration of career and academic advising.

Billie Streufert, Assistant Vice Provost, Student Success and Engagement, Augustana University
With 10+ years of experience in higher education, career and academic success are her specialties. As the director of the Success Center at Augustana, Billie had the joy of helping others discover meaningful work and engaging study. As an advisor of exploring students, she specialized in working with upper-class students thinking about changing their major.
Driven by the pursuit of excellence and quality teaching, Billie has earned distinction through multiple certifications, awards, professional publications, and participation in the Fulbright program. Her greatest joy has been collaborating with colleagues and friends to enhance students' persistence, learning, and engagement.

Kimberly Smith, Associate Vice Provost for Student Success Initiatives, Virgina Tech
Kimberly currently serves as Associate Vice Provost of Student Success Initiatives at Virginia Tech. In this role, sge provides leadership and coordination for university-wide programs and initiatives related to enhancing student learning. She is responsible for developing, implementing, and assessing initiatives throughout the university community in collaboration with various university stakeholders in support of undergraduate education. Dr. Smith has served in NACADA in various capacities including a member of NACADA’s Consult and Speakers Bureau and most recently being selected to serve as a fellow with the Excellence in Academic Advising (EAA) collaborative between NACADA and the Gardner Institute for Excellence in Undergraduate Education to advance student learning, success, persistence, retention, and degree completion through a comprehensive, standards-based assessment process to promote excellence in academic advising.
Kimberly has presented at the local, state, and national level at various professional conferences on topics related to assessment of student success, academic advising, data informed decision making, developing support for underrepresented and unserved students, and leading organizational change. She’s the co-author of a chapter in Student Academic Services: An Integrated Approach entitled “Applying Quality Educational Principles to Academic Advising” and author of “Factors Impacting the Academic Achievement of Undecided College Students,” a chapter within Research Studies in Higher Education: Educating Multicultural College Students.
She is also actively engaged with numerous professional and civic associations and seeks to contribute to her community in meaningful ways. She currently serves as an Executive Board member of the American Association for Blacks in Higher Education (AABHE) and mentors young professionals seeking to enhance their leadership and management skills.

Dana Hebreard, Director of Career Services, Aquinas College
As an innovative leader, Dana has expertise in career counseling, academic advising, program planning, and learning management. She is highly skilled in assisting student and alumni with student affairs and a dept at collaborating with students, team members, and external resources utilizing effective communication strategies. She holds certified career coaching skills and job transition coaching, Career Development Network.
Through campus involvement as an college student, she found her passion for student development and completed her masters in college student affairs and leadership at Loyola University Chicago. She came to Grand Rapids in the late 90s to serve as the director of student activities at Aquinas College.
A lifelong learner, she continued her education at Western Michigan University earning a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership in 2011. Most recently, she was a career counselor and director of academic advising at another local institution. She teaches a Career Development class designed for upper-class students and also advises both students and alumni on resumes, cover letter writing, job search strategies, interviewing skills, and other areas related to career exploration and development. Dana also works with individual employers and a number of college consortiums, to develop recruitment strategies and to help broaden the scope of employment opportunities for Aquinas students. She is an active member of the advising communities in the National Association of Academic Advising and also attends NACE and AHRM events to continuous learn how to better serve AQ students.
Dana strives every day to be actionable and accountable through timely, accurate, and intentional career coaching and to pursue her passions and purpose to live a life overflowing with peace and joy.
