Advisor’s Toolbox: Parallel Planning and Alternative Advising

***

On-Demand Webinar Recording| $300

Strategies advisors can apply to better support students who are denied entry into their intended academic program, struggle in their chosen major or face a difficult decision related to their major or career choice.

Why This Topic Matters

Change is inevitable. Personal and professional transitions are part of life. Effective academic advisors teach students to cope with uncertainty, particularly as they encounter competitive admission for selective undergraduate or graduate programs. Without such support, students are at risk of academic failure, attrition, or, more tragically, suicide.

Learn how to use parallel planning and alternative advising to teach students adaptability and help them better manage difficult decisions around changing majors and career goals. Understand the case for using these important advising approaches in supporting students to persist in college and to take a positive approach to changing majors—critical to their success and mental health.

Consider the difference between parallel planning and alternative advising and when to utilize strategies in each approach. Learn what language works with students and what language does not when discussing career alternatives. Discuss how to motivate students who are struggling academically or who are unable to see the options before them. This interactive webinar will include:
