Building A Sustainable Orientation Advising Model (Webinar)

February 22nd, 2023 | 12:00 p.m. EST - 1:15 p.m. EST | $395

Walk through steps to build a better orientation advising model that meets students’ needs while maintaining advisor well-being.

Why This Topic Matters

Many advisors have large caseloads of students making effective, supportive orientation advising challenging. Advisors need a system to make the workload manageable while still meeting students’ needs. Designing a new model that includes virtual and group advising can help advisors better serve large numbers of students successfully.

Who Should Attend?

This session is intended for advising professionals, faculty advisors and Directors of Advising who want to transform their orientation advising model into one that is effective and sustainable, including:

  • Vice Presidents, Provosts, Directors, and Coordinators of Academic Advising and/or Orientation

  • Academic Advisors

  • Faculty Advisors

Overview

Each summer, advisors are tasked with finding a way to advise a large number of incoming students while providing them with an experience that leaves each student feeling connected to their advisor. After years of increasing student caseloads alongside the challenges of 2020, many advisors feel overwhelmed and fatigued.

In an effort to improve the experience for advisors while maintaining an individualized experience for students, the presenters redesigned their approach. They created an online hybrid advising program that consisted of group advising and one-on-one meetings.

In this session, advising administrators will walk you through how to develop a similar model at your institution. They will share the challenges experienced with previous versions of our orientation advising model, describe the online hybrid program that they created, and provide attendees with materials to replicate a similar program in their unit.

This engaging webinar will provide tangible strategies to:

  • Consider current orientation advising challenges

  • Determine how online and group advising elements can be integrated into your current work

  • Create your new program: ideas and logistics

  • Implement your new model successfully

  • Utilize resources from a case study to support your work
