Overview

This program is ideal for college student success professionals looking to build, improve, and assess Explore research and best practices for building peer mentoring programs that contribute to student success initiatives on college campuses.

Throughout this interactive session, attendees will focus on how to build a strong foundation for peer mentoring programs based on research and existing models. The facilitators will share examples to demonstrate how to begin building peer mentoring programs, important identity and college-specific considerations, and how to assess peer mentoring programs. Additionally, facilitators will share outcomes connected to existing peer mentoring programs to highlight the importance of peer mentoring in student success efforts.

Attendees will have the opportunity to share their own ideas about peer mentoring and leave with tools they can incorporate into their existing programs or into developing new programs. This webinar will:

  • Provide an overview of existing peer mentoring research and frameworks

  • Discuss components of building successful peer mentoring programs

  • Consider how to assess programs to support student success

  • Provide examples of peer mentoring programs based in a college department and an identity-specific program

Instructors

Michelle Cadena, Assistant Director, El Centro, Colorado State University

Michelle was raised in Tijuana/San Diego and completed her B.A. in Psychology and M.A. in Education with an Emphasis in Multicultural Counseling at San Diego State University. Michelle has worked in Higher Education for over 10 years which include experience in Student Affairs, TRiO programs and Mentoring Programs. Her passion for educational justice stems from her personal experience navigating the education system as a transborder Latinx student, as well as her experience working with students who have been historically excluded from the higher education narrative. Through her position in El Centro, Michelle hopes to continue advocating for her students, as well as provide space that fosters conversation, learning and growth for all who engage in it. Something that is important for her to embed in her work is art since she is an artist and believes in the power of healing through art. Other things that she enjoys are coffee, trying new food and music.  

 


Jill Putman, Assistant Director of Outreach and Support Programs

Jill Putman (she/her/hers) serves as the Associate Director of Outreach and Support Programs and has experience supporting student success across higher education in advising, residence life, undergraduate admissions, and TRIO SSS programs. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Miami University and a Master of Education degree in College Student Affairs Administration from the University of Georgia. Jill is a first-generation college graduate and passionate about educational access, equity, and promoting asset-based approaches to student success.
