From Transactional to Transformative Student Success Coaching (Webinar)

***

November 15th, 2022 | 2:00 p.m. - 3:15 p.m. ET | $395

This interactive session will inspire, encourage and equip participants to take their success coaching practices – and their coaching programs – to a next level of impact by building deeper relationships and more profoundly empowering students

Why Is This Topic Critical?

The recent spread of success coaching programs is part and parcel of the agenda to more intensively and substantively address equity gaps in higher education. It responds to a problem – the promise of higher education as a vehicle for closing gaps in the American Dream has all too often not been redeemed. Students arrive (thanks, admissions) but then (all too often) depart long before achieving a degree. Success coaching posits a solution – cadres of success coaches can far more intensively (relative to typical academic advising) guide, support and monitor student well-being, progress and development. The dilemma is that success coaching – despite best intentions – can lapse into primarily being a vehicle for “monitoring” as opposed to empowering students.

Higher education’s deeper purpose and promise is to cultivate self-efficacy, self-determination and self-actualization. How might we structure our success coaching practices and programs to more proactively facilitate student self-empowerment for the long haul? If paired with a student-empowerment approach, success coaching can transform paradigms and practices in student support and to transform lives for the long haul.

Who Should Attend?

This program is appropriate for any campus professional or faculty member seeking to cultivate deeper relationships with students and impacting student development more profoundly. This includes:

  • Success Coaches and Success Coach Program Leaders

  • Peer-to-Peer Leaders and Mentors and Program Administrators

  • Academic and Faculty Advisors

  • Advising Directors

  • Academic Deans, Provosts and Vice Presidents who oversee Advising and/or Student Success Initiatives

  • Staff in Financial Aid, Housing, Orientation, Parent and Family Engagement and any other office that aspires to more deeply empower the students they serve.

Overview

Success coaching programs and related student success efforts are a critical aspect of equity imperatives in higher education to encourage academic achievement. Yet, students who receive success coaching—in fact ALL students —experience ongoing internal and external challenges – in various facets of their lives - during their college journeys. While current success coaching practices help students navigate campus and learn academic success strategies, these programs often ignore the deeper work of addressing students’ mindsets and internal motivations for succeeding in college.

This webinar will give you tools to move from “TRANSACTIONAL” coaching – providing students with system navigation know how, direct them to resources, “monitor” progress and/or respond to crisis on the back end) to “TRANSFORMATIVE” coaching – helping students help themselves holistically re-frame mindsets and purpose, re-cast habits, take self-directed action on meaningful goals, and cultivate powerful alliances to support their college journeys. In transformative coaching we empower students to continually enhance self-insight, take action and cultivate alliances.

We will discuss practical strategies – and share practical tools– to help students help themselves. Then, we will consider organizational strategies that coaching programs can use to facilitate professional development and continuous program improvement, and enhance reputation across campus. Participants will gain access to a plethora of tools that can be immediately applied to engaging with and supporting students. This fun, engaging, informative, practical and fun session will:

  • Probe the distinction between transactional and transformative coaching.

  • Learn about a unique “awareness, action and alliances” model for “making the most of college”.

  • Engage in one or more interactive immersive exercises that will provoke self-insights for you and can be turn keyed with students.

  • Discuss practical methods for impacting student insight, everyday action and capacities to cultivate alliances.

  • Discuss structures which can support coach professional development, facilitate program continuous improvement and enhance reputation across campus.

  • Have ample opportunities for open ended Q&A.

  • Gain ongoing access to student success tools and workshop outlines that the presenter has created through Awesome All Around.
