Many advisors have large caseloads of students making effective, supportive orientation advising challenging. Advisors need a system to make the workload manageable while still meeting students’ needs. Each summer, advisors are tasked with finding a way to advise a large number of incoming students while providing them with an experience that leaves each student feeling connected to their advisor. After years of increasing student caseloads alongside the challenges of 2020, many advisors feel overwhelmed and fatigued.
In an effort to improve the experience for advisors while maintaining an individualized experience for students, the presenters redesigned their approach. They created an online hybrid advising program that consisted of group advising and one-on-one meetings.
In this session, advising administrators will walk you through how to develop a similar model at your institution. They will share the challenges experienced with previous versions of our orientation advising model, describe the online hybrid program that they created, and provide attendees with materials to replicate a similar program in their unit.

Stephanie Hart, Director of Academic Advising in the College of Natural Resources and Environment, Virginia Tech
In her current role, she oversees the college’s academic advising services and daily operations of the unit. Over the last 12 years, Stephanie has developed a wide range of skills from her work in recruitment, academic advising, scholarship support, student programming, event planning, and administration. Stephanie has a passion for finding ways to use technologies and systems to create efficient, high-impact advising practices. Stephanie earned a Master’s Degree in Higher Education and a Bachelor’s of Science in Human Development, both from Virginia Tech.
Dana McGuire, Assistant Director of Academic Advising in the College of Natural Resources and Environment at Virginia Tech
Her current role focuses on student retention, academic advising, and assessment, but she also skilled in student development, program development, training, and peer education. Dana has over ten years of experience in academic support and advising and her work is driven by her desire to guide and advocate for students as they deepen their self-awareness, explore their interests, and develop and refine their educational, career, and life goals.
Dana earned an M.A.Ed. in Higher Education from Virginia Tech, a post-baccalaureate secondary education teaching certificate from Penn State, and a B.A. in History, also from Penn State.
