Nicole Stella, Director, GEAR UP ASPIRE, University of Nevada, Las Vegas
In her current role, Nicole manages grant-funded programs that support high school and undergraduate students from underrepresented populations—GEAR UP ASPIRE is a Southern Nevada college pipeline program focused on guiding students to post-secondary education. Previously, she was the Assistant Director for Academic Advising and Retention, Progression and Completion for Exploring students at UNLV where she was responsible for managing college-wide retention initiatives and outreach, as well as directly advising students. She began her career as a residence hall director at the University of Colorado Boulder, leading a residential college model for Honors, Engineering, and Communications students.
Nicole is currently a doctoral student in higher education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She served on the NACADA Region 9 Board as Conference Co-Chair. Her research interests include undocumented student support services and academic under-preparedness.
Ariana Garcia, Retention Coordinator and Academic Advisor, University of Nevada, Las Vegas
In her current role, Ariana is responsible for creating and implementing intervention strategies to positively impact the retention, progression, and completion for college students in the Greenspun College of Urban Affairs. She was previously Strategic Initiatives Coordinator at UNLV where she developed, assessed, and analyzed over 200 data metrics to evaluate the university's progression on its strategic plan. Before that, she served as Scholar Success Coordinator at Colorado State University where she was the scholar contact for various large scholarship groups. She mentored and advised students receiving scholarships, all aimed at supporting the retention and graduation of first-generation and low-income students.
Ariana is currently a doctoral candidate in higher education. Her research broadly explores access and equity issues facing higher education. While specifically focused on the educational and personal experiences of Latinx graduate students. Ariana is passionate about student success and supporting efforts for institutional advancement.
