Mónica Martínez El Sheikh, Associate Director, Academic Coaching and Advising, Florida Atlantic University (FAU)

Mónica is the Associate Director for Academic Coaching and Advising within the ACCESS Program of University Advising Services. In her role, she manages the operational calendar of the ACCESS Program, supervises a staff of professional ACCESS Coaches and Advisors, directs the Peer Academic Coaching (PAC) Program, and coordinates two First-Year Experience (FYE) Courses. Mónica’s efforts serve to provide academic skill development and academic coaching to first-and-second year students. As a part of her work, she utilizes the Appreciative Education framework.

Mónica earned her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Georgia and began her career as a Defense Contractor supporting the Department of Defense and State Department. Through her extensive volunteer work, she realized that her true passion was to help others to achieve their highest potential. Mónica went on to earn her Master of Education in Counseling and Development from George Mason University. After going into the counseling field, she discovered her love of advising and working with college students. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Higher Education Leadership from FAU, where her dissertation research focuses on the use of humor in academic advising. She is also a Certified Appreciative Advisor.
