Teaching Metacognition: Helping Students Think About Their Thinking to Improve Academic Success
December 2, 2026 | 12:00 p.m. EST - 1:15 p.m. EST | $425
How can academic advisors, success coaches, tutors, and student-support professionals help students actively reflect on how they think and learn to improve their academic success?
Why is This Topic Important?
Metacognition, the ability to recognize, monitor, and regulate one’s own thinking, helps students become more intentional learners, decision-makers, and problem-solvers (Flavell, 1976). In the classroom, it influences how students plan learning strategies, monitor their understanding, reflect, and adjust their strategies when something is not working. Beyond the classroom, metacognitive skills help students respond to challenges, seek support, and make complex decisions about their education, careers, and futures.

Overview
Faculty, advisers, and student success professionals each have valuable opportunities to help students understand why metacognition matters and how it can support their academic progress, persistence, confidence, and future goals. This webinar will introduce the foundations of metacognition and explore how faculty, advisers, and student support leaders can make metacognition visible and meaningful to students. Participants will consider how questions, reflection activities, goal-setting processes, and intentional conversations can help students identify their strengths, examine their assumptions, evaluate their choices, and develop more effective approaches to learning, academic paths, and career planning.
The session will also highlight opportunities for faculty, advisers, and student success staff to develop a shared language and coordinated practices around reflection, self-regulation, student agency, and academic success. Participants will leave with a "quick tips" planning guide and strategies they can adapt to their own roles to reinforce metacognitive skills across the student experience.
By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:
Define metacognition and explain its relevance to learning, persistence, and student success.
Help students connect metacognitive practices to classroom learning and academic decision-making.
Use reflective questions and activities to help students examine their approaches to learning, challenges, and help-seeking.
Identify role-specific strategies that faculty, advisers, and student success professionals can use to reinforce metacognition.
Explore ways to develop a shared institutional language and collaborative approach to supporting students’ metacognitive growth.
