Strategic Scale-up of Career Services with Peer Paraprofessionals

March 12th, 2025 | 12:00 p.m. EST - 1:15 p.m. EST | $395

Effectively leverage career peer advisors to strategically expand the reach and capacity of full-time career services professionals.

Why This Topic Matters

When asked about motivations for pursuing higher education, students’ responses consistently indicate that work and career goals are primary drivers (Strada-Gallup, “Why Higher Ed?”, 2018). Yet, those motivations often do not translate into engagement with career services.

Significant career services outreach across campus is needed throughout students’ college experiences to cultivate the numerous positive outcomes that students associate with strong connections between their education and career-related experiences (e.g., expressing that education was “worth the cost” and “helped me achieve my goals”) (Clayton & Torpey-Saboe, 2021; Leigh, 2021b). This webinar explores the great value found in leveraging the strengths of peer paraprofessionals as a means of strategically expanding the reach and capacity of full-time career services professionals.

Overview

The use of paraprofessionals in career services is a longstanding practice with surprisingly little published information to provide guidance on program design, implementation, and assessment. This webinar will fill in the gaps and give you best practices for building or growing an effective program on your campus. Discussion topics are illustrated by examples, primarily drawing from an active peer mentoring program at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Join us for an this interactive webinar that considers key components of building a peer paraprofessional program, including:

  • considering the environment and needs addressed by the program

  • selecting a framework and developing learning outcomes to ground the program

  • developing initial and continuous training plans

  • implementing the program, with ongoing supervision

  • communicating with key stakeholders

  • conducting program assessment; and

  • using assessment results to both demonstrate impact and inform continuous improvement
