Shelia Higgs Burkhalter, Vice President, Student Affairs, Winthrop University
VP Shelia Higgs Burkhalter (affectionately known as Shiggs) currently serves as vice president for student affairs at Winthrop University where she proudly carries the title as the institution’s first black senior leader. Burkhalter shares her story, “First, Only, Different” in the Amazon best-selling book, Brave Women at Work: Stories of Resilience, published in October 2022.
Burkhalter is a motivated and focused educator who is committed to student success and cultivating innovative, transformative, and vibrant campus communities where inclusive excellence is expected and collaboration embraced as an effective way to develop and serve students. Her higher education career spans eight institutions and 30 years. She was recently named a 2023 NASPA Pillar of the Profession. The achievement pays tribute to a select group of people who have served as leaders, teachers, mentors and scholars in student affairs and higher education.
Burkhalter is an accomplished speaker, facilitator, and a certified Executive & Leadership Transitions Coach. She specializes in helping aspiring executives and leaders to successfully transition to their next level of leadership. As the owner of ShiggsB Coaching, LLC, Burkhalter incorporates her knowledge of leadership, people, communication, and energy to create a transformational experience for her clients.
