A Trauma-Informed Approach to Supporting Students on Campus

April 18th, 2024 | 12:00 p.m. EST - 1:15 p.m. EST | $395

In this webinar, gain knowledge and strategies to help college educators to respond appropriately to students who have experienced trauma.

Why This Topic Matters

Covid led to increased incidences of trauma, which has caused greater awareness of the impact of trauma on individuals and society--and college students are by no means an exception. Many of today’s college students experienced trauma during Covid. Others experienced trauma prior to Covid and/or before starting college. Students risk experiencing new trauma during their time on campus. To understand the prevalence of trauma on today’s college students, consider these pre-Covid statistics:

  • 66% of incoming first-year students report having experienced a traumatic life event (Read et al,, 2011).

  • 62% of adults report having experienced at least one potentially traumatic event before they turned 18 (CDC, 2019).

Training educators about trauma and responding appropriately to trauma has shown to decrease students’ anxiety, depression and help them get the support they need to heal while also persisting in school.

Instructor

Samantha Black, Academic Advisor and Success Coach, University of Northern Colorado (UNC)

Samantha advises and coaches college students, helping them achieve success in the college environment. While working on her master’s degree in student affairs leadership, Samantha interned and volunteered as an advocate for the Assault Survivor’s Advocacy Program (ASAP) where she received extensive training on trauma, sexual and gendered violence and how to support survivors. Samantha’s time at ASAP was a huge influence on how she works with students. Her goal is to provide students with the necessary support, resources, and information to empower them to make decisions that are best for them.

In her current work with college students, she recognizes that trauma is an issue on campuses across the globe. She has presented workshops on trauma-informed response to sexual violence and trauma-informed student success to national audiences.

Samantha earned her M.A. in higher education and student affairs leadership. In her free time, Samantha works to educate herself about systems of oppression and how different identities intersect with one and other.
