Beating The Sophomore Slump (Webinar)

May 24th, 2024 | 12:00 p.m. EST - 1:15 p.m. EST | $395

Develop sophomore programming where students explore career development, meaning making and purpose.

Why This Topic Matters

Second year students can feel invisible and isolated. Many also feel uncertain about their choice of major. Retaining students in their second year of college requires more intentional support to help students find meaning and purpose in their academic journey.

Who Should Attend?

This program is ideal for college administration, staff and faculty looking to support sophomore student retention from such areas as:

  • Academic Leadership

  • Academic Advising

  • Retention Programs

  • TRIO and Student Support Services

Overview

Retaining students in their sophomore year requires programming that addresses the specific needs of these students who are often looking for meaning and purpose to fuel their academic journey. Yet, many campuses do not provide second-year students this critically needed support.

In this workshop, you will explore the needs and experiences of second-year students. You will then examine theories and approaches to effective sophomore programming, including the importance of career advising, meaning making and developing purpose. Finally, you will learn about a successful programmatic model used on a number of campuses—a sophomore student retreat—and explore how to plan a sophomore retreat or similar event on your campus. In this interactive webinar you will consider:

  • The needs and experiences of second-year students

  • Theories and approaches supporting one institution’s success

  • How to plan a sophomore retreat or similar event on your campus
