Engaging in Career Conversations with Students: Training for College Educators (Webinar)

May 15th, 2024 | 12:00 p.m. - 1:15 p.m. EST | $395)

Students with questions about career goals and/or choosing a major often approach the topic with their faculty, faculty advisors, academic advisors and other non-career campus professionals first. Knowing how to have this conversation and make an appropriate career services referral can be the difference between a student staying or leaving your institution.

Why This Topic Matters

Research indicates having professional goals increases student success and retention. Yet, nationally, nearly 1 in 3 graduates never visited their school’s career services office or used online career resources, according to the most recent Student Voice survey. A 2016 Gallup survey found an even higher number of students not visiting—4 in 10.

When college faculty and professionals across campus have training to introduce career conversations and make good referrals to the campus career center, they play a crucial role in student success by helping students develop appropriate professional goals, complete their degrees and prepare for professional success after graduation.

Who Should Attend?

This program is meant for college faculty and instructors and campus professionals interested in learning more about (or providing training on) the career development process and how to engage students in an introductory career development conversation. Ideal for:

  • deans and provosts

  • college faculty and instructors

  • faculty advisors

  • academic advisors and student success professionals

Overview

Before ever setting foot in the campus career center, many college students have already asked their professors, faculty advisors, academic advisors and other campus professionals advice about choosing a career or major. Many of these students fail to find support, resources and a caring connection to the campus career center. Untrained in career development conversations, faculty, advisors and campus professionals may provide suggestions that cause students to make poor major or career choices and inadvertently lead students to disengage from classes, academics and the institution.

This training with a recipient of the National Career Development Association’s (NCDA) Outstanding Career Practitioner Award ensures students' initial encounters with the career development process are positive and helpful by training faculty and other campus professionals on the art of the career development conversation. Attendees will:

  • Develop skills and confidence to engage in introductory career conversations with students

  • Explore key career development theories for framing these conversations

  • Discuss and practice questioning strategies to help students verbalize their career thoughts and questions

  • Consider how to use what you learn from a conversation to make an effective career center referral

  • Learn what you need to know about your campus career services to make stronger, better-informed referrals to available career resources

  • Ensure students receive consistent messaging about the importance of engaging in career development throughout their college career

  • Tips for passing on your new strategies to colleagues in-person and remotely
