Why is This Topic Important?
Integrating Career Development into Academic Advising is a comprehensive approach designed to make career development an intentional and ongoing part of every student’s educational journey. Rather than treating academic advising and career development as separate services, the program equips academic advisors with the knowledge, tools, and strategies to incorporate meaningful career development conversations into routine advising interactions—from a student’s first semester through graduation, transfer, and entry into the workforce. In doing so, student's gain a stronger sense of direction and purpose in their pursuit of a college degree and are better prepared for a career post-graduation.
Who Should Attend?
This program is ideal for higher education professionals who are looking to better support students, especially:
Deans, Vice Presidents and Provosts of Academic Affairs

Career Services Leadership
TRIO and Student Support Services Staff
Overview
Integrating career development into academic advising helps advisors guide students in connecting their interests, strengths, values, academic choices, and career goals. Ultimately, the goal is to expand the advising conversation beyond “What classes should I take?” to include “Where is my education taking me, and what can I do now to prepare for what comes next?”
By embedding career development into academic advising, every advising interaction becomes an opportunity to help students connect education, career, and purpose—supporting students not only in completing a credential, but also in developing the knowledge, skills, experiences, and confidence needed to successfully navigate their next step.
The program helps advisors guide students in connecting their interests, strengths, values, academic choices, and career goals. Career development is incorporated into advising through career exploration and assessment, major and pathway selection, labor-market information, employability skills, experiential learning, transfer planning, career readiness, and the development of realistic education-to-career plans.
Early advising conversations focus on exploration, self-awareness, and connecting interests to academic and career pathways. As students’ progress, conversations shift toward developing career-ready skills, gaining relevant experiences, building professional networks, and understanding workforce expectations. Later conversations emphasize transition and helping students prepare for employment, transfer, or continued education. In this program, you will learn to:
Embed career advising into advising.
Utilize a developmental approach to career conversations.
Integrate career conversations at each stage of a student’s career development.
Identify how the program also strengthens collaboration among academic advising, career services, faculty, transfer services, employers, and other campus partners.
