Develop an Industry-Based Mentoring Program for STEM Students (Webinar)
March 8th, 2022 | 2:00 p.m. ET - 3:15 p.m. ET | $395
Gain tools for developing a successful program pairing STEM students with alumni professionals to benefit all involved.
Why This Topic Matters
STEM fields are constantly changing even in normal economic environments. COVID has made these fields even more volatile. Consequently, graduating STEM students are faced with new levels of uncertainty for which they have never been prepared because advisors themselves (and none of us really) have ever experienced pandemic-induced vicissitudes.
Industry-based alumni mentoring programs provide multiple benefits. With employers often now hiring by job function, rather than discipline STEM students need to understand the possibilities that exist with their degrees. Industry mentors can also provide insight into the current job landscape and hiring practices.
Who Should Attend?
This program is ideal for college professionals who work with students in STEM academic programs or career services, including:
Directors, Advisors and Coordinators overseeing STEM programs and Upward Bound Math and Science Programs
Academic Deans, Provosts and Vice Presidents who oversee support for students in STEM fields
Career Services professionals overseeing industry mentoring and internship opportunities in STEM fields
Overview
In this webinar, you will learn tried-and-tested tricks and strategies to help you develop a highly effective industry-based mentoring program for the STEM students at your college. The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geodetic Engineering at Ohio State University started an Industry Mentorship Program in 2014. The goal of this program was to pair current students with alumni to get them connected to industry and re-engage alumni with their department. They have grown from 9 students and 5 mentors to 65 students and 59 mentors in the 2020-2021 academic year (despite the pandemic). Moreover, students and mentors alike highly rate the program.
Gain pragmatic insights and tangible strategies for:
Finding new ways to attract your alumni and mentors from the STEM industry
Engaging your alumni and mentors in ways that make them want to continue to participate
Starting and scaling your STEM industry-based mentoring program organically with few resources
