Why Is This Topic Important?

Is college worth the expense? Colleges and universities across the country are being asked this questions. Learn how to integrate career development into college classrooms so that you can ensure your constituents that an education from your institution translates into post-graduation careers for students.

Who Should Attend?

This program is ideal for career center professionals looking to develop a program to help faculty integrate career readiness outcomes and career center resources into their college classes thereby improving students’ career readiness.

Overview

With the guidance of the Florida Atlantic University (FAU) Career Center, faculty include career center resources, career staff presentations, and/or career-objective assignments into their classes to maximize students’ understanding of career readiness. The career center strategically builds on the knowledge and skills students are already developing in classrooms while encouraging faculty buy-in to help students better understand and apply that career learning.

The program, called Classroom to Career (C2C), seamlessly aligns the career center’s objectives with faculty’s current teaching, while also providing a way for faculty to engage with the career center at their own pace and comfort level. Classroom to Career’s tiered system helps faculty better integrate career readiness outcomes and career resources into their everyday work with students through faculty training and one-to-one support. Faculty help students by informing them about career resources, bringing career professionals into classes and/or embedding career assignments into class syllabi.

Program successes include increased faculty involvement in the Classroom to Career program, graduates who are more prepared and “career-ready;” increases in internship & job placement; increased usage of career services including networking opportunities; and increases in students applying classroom learning to industry and real-world experiences. As a result of the presentation participants will…

  • Understand the importance of why career development professionals need to train and support faculty in integrating career development into the curriculum

  • Learn best practices for how to embed career center services and events into class assignments

  • Learn how to connect with and inform faculty, instructors, and departments

  • Track the results of student engagement with Career Center assignments and programs utilizing the Canvas Learning Management System
