Explore how to incorporate equity and socially just practices into academic advisor training to prepare advisors to support the increasingly diverse student population entering higher education.
Throughout this interactive session, attendees will critically reflect on their own social identities and current advising and student success practices. The facilitators will then help attendees consider ways to shift language, approaches, and interactions to serve historically marginalized students at the intersections of their multiple identities.
As they facilitate a conversation with attendees, they will provide equity and social justice frameworks grounded in research and theory and discuss specific tools and strategies to shift to socially just approaches to academic advising.
Attendees will have the opportunity to share personal stories regarding their social justice journeys and will leave with concrete tools they can incorporate into their advising training practices.This webinar will:
Provide an overview of the components of equity and social justice including competencies, intersectionality and power, privilege, and oppression
Analyze current academic advising theories and philosophies through an equity and social justice paradigm
Consider how to incorporate intersectional, asset-based frameworks into academic advisor training and development
Discuss components of and equity and socially just training activities for advisors

Fabiola Mora, Director of the Academic Achievement Center, Colorado State University
Fabiola Mora (she,her,hers) serves as the Director of the Academic Advancement Center at Colorado State University. She has worked in higher education since 2004 and has dedicated her career to serving historically underrepresented students in a myriad of functional areas including financial aid, multicultural services, advising and retention, TRIO SSS, and first year experience programs. As a first-generation college graduate who grew up with a low-income and undocumented background, she has a deep personal connection, commitment, and love for social justice and equity.
Jill Putman, Assistant Director of Outreach and Support Programs
Jill Putman (she/her/hers) serves as the Associate Director of Outreach and Support Programs and has experience supporting student success across higher education in advising, residence life, undergraduate admissions, and TRIO SSS programs. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Miami University and a Master of Education degree in College Student Affairs Administration from the University of Georgia. Jill is a first-generation college graduate and passionate about educational access, equity, and promoting asset-based approaches to student success.
